Bao Buns

I love steamed bao buns, they are so soft and yummy.

Bao Buns

  • 1 oz of yeast

  • 150 ml of milk, warm milk

  • 50 ml of warm water

  • 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour

  • 4 tablespoon of sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder

  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Mix the milk, water and yeast together and leave sit for 15 minutes until it starts to bubble. Mix together flour, sugar, salt and baking powder into another bowl. Add the vinegar and oil to the milk and water mixture and then slowly add to the dry mixture and knead for 10-15 minutes until mixture is nice and smooth. Place in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap and keep in a warm place allowing to double in size about 2 hours. Roll out to a long long about 3 cm thick and cut into 18 pieces 3 cm long. Cover and let rise until double in size another 1 hour.

Get a steam basket going and place buns in the basket and cover. Steam for 8 minutes or until puffed.

Fill with your favorite filling and enjoy!
