Fresh Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns

I know my shaping on these are not perfect but this recipe is. I use this for my hamburger and hot dog buns and they are so yummy!!

Buns

  • 1 cup hot water

  • 2 tablespoons of butter, at room temperature

  • 1 large egg

  • 3 1/2 cups of flour

  • 1/4 cup of sugar

  • 1 1/4 teaspoons of salt

  • 1 tablespoon of instant yeast

  • 3 tablespoons of melted butter

  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Mix all of the ingredients together except the melted butter and sesame seeds either by hand, stand mixer with a dough hook, or bread machine. When the dough comes together and is soft and smooth stop mixing. Cover the dough with a reusable lid or dish towel and place in a draft free warm place for 2 hours, or until it's nearly doubled in bulk.

Gently deflate the dough, and divide it into 8 pieces (for regular sized hamburger buns) . Shape each piece into a round ball; flatten to about 3" across. Place the buns on a baking mat, cover, and let rise for about an hour, until noticeably puffy. Preheat the oven to 375°F.

Brush the buns with about half of the melted butter and then bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from the oven and brush with the remaining melted butter and top with sesame seeds.
